Last week, the Colorado Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission accomplished an important step in the redistricting process by publishing its first preliminary map developed using final census data and public feedback. After 36 hearings and thousands of public comments, the commission’s staff published a congressional map that significantly incorporates community input and reflects Colorado’s growing and diversifying population. This is an encouraging step forward, as the map is only one of three potential staff maps that will be presented this month. There is still an opportunity for the commission to accept public testimony during the second round of public hearings to ensure all communities of interest are considered before approving a final map.
"Colorado’s preliminary congressional map marks critical movement toward a final map that incorporates community input as required by Amendment Y. We’re glad to see that the preliminary map attempts to reflect testimony provided about the state’s various communities of interest. While we expect changes to this map following the second round of public hearings, it will be important for commission staff and commissioners to use this map to frame the process moving forward,” said Marco Dorado, AOTL Colorado State Director.
“There is still an opportunity for commissioners to more fully understand Colorado’s diverse communities of interest. All On The Line Colorado will remain extremely engaged in supporting the participation of as many Colordans as possible to ensure the final map appropriately reflects our state’s communities,'' continued Dorado.
