Communities of Interest Must be Kept Together in New Congressional District North of Denver
This week the United States Census Bureau released final population data that will be used by Colorado and states across the country to draw new maps for their redistricting processes. The people of Colorado deserve a map that gives them an opportunity to elect politicians that fairly represent the growing and diverse population in every corner of the state.
“In 2018, the people of Colorado overwhelmingly supported the creation of two citizen-led independent redistricting commissions to redraw our political maps. Now the commissions must live up to the spirit of that reform by maximizing opportunities for public participation until final maps are approved. That is why the Colorado Independent Congressional and Legislative Redistricting Commissions must hold an additional round of public hearings (following COVID-19 safety protocols) in each congressional district that is accessible to all Coloradans, specifically Asian, Black, Latino, and Native American populations. The voice of all Coloradans must be reflected in subsequent proposed maps and the process must culminate in maps that give voters an opportunity to elect representatives who represent the growing diversity of Coloradans across the state,” said Marco Dorado, AOTL Colorado State Director.
“The preliminary maps and feedback provided during the public hearing process demonstrate that a new congressional district north of Denver would appropriately reflect the state’s growing Latino population and communities of interest. Countless community members have testified in favor of a new district north of Denver that would keep the growing Latino community whole and create an opportunity for effective representation. All On The Line Colorado has worked tirelessly to train and inform hundreds of Coloradans about the redistricting process, and we will continue this work to ensure final congressional and state legislative maps truly reflect communities of interest across our state,” Dorado continued.
