Eric Holder: DeSantis’s Second Proposal Is Nearly Identical to the Flawed Map Rejected Last Week
Florida – Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States released the following statement in response to Governor Ron DeSantis submitting another draft congressional map to the legislature.
“The Governor is once again injecting himself into the redistricting process to advance a map that egregiously gerrymanders the state and cuts the number of black opportunity districts in half. Last week, the legislature declined to take up a nearly identical - and equally flawed - proposal from the Governor, after the Florida Supreme Court denied his request for an advisory opinion on it. It is the responsibility of the Florida Legislature to pass redistricting maps that fairly represent the state, and do not violate previous rulings from the courts - this map fails both criteria.”
Last week, the Florida Supreme Court denied Governor DeSantis’s request for an advisory opinion on his proposed map eliminating half the state’s Black opportunity congressional districts. The Republican-controlled legislature similarly refused to take up the legally flawed map proposed by the Governor, instead moving forward with its own versions.
