All On The Line Calls On Chairman Hunter To End Gerrymandering That Plagues Texas

Texans Demand Fair & Transparent Redistricting Process

Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont) announced House committee assignments today, appointing Representative Briscoe Cain (R-Deer Park) as chair of the Elections Committee and Representative Todd Hunter (R-Corpus Christi) as chair of the Redistricting Committee. Last year, Representative Cain traveled to Philadelphia to participate in the dangerous “Stop the Steal” events and has continued to promote and amplify overturning results from a free and fair election. By appointing Cain, Republicans are entrusting the creation of election law to someone who does not accept election results, and is planning to suppress eligible Texas voters. This is a troubling appointment because Texas legislators should commit to a free and fair electoral process -- and that means ending suppression tactics and unnecessary, unlawful gerrymandering.

“The fate of fair maps in Texas will depend, in part, on Chairman Hunter’s willingness to renounce the racial gerrymandering that plagued the 2011 process. Chairman Hunter must make this process transparent and work diligently and in good faith to end gerrymandering and create fair maps for all Texans,” said Gen Van Cleve All On The Line Texas State Director.

“Regional hearings should be held across Texas, with enough notice given, so that all interested individuals and communities can be heard. New maps  could define the state for the next decade and should reflect the growth and rich diversity of Texas. Texans will no longer accept maps that allow politicians to choose their voters or that marginalize communities of color,” continued Van Cleve.

All On The Line

All On The Line is on a mission to end gerrymandering because it contributes to the polarization and dysfunction in our political system. Since launching in 2019, we’ve built a grassroots volunteer organization ahead of the 2021 redistricting process. This work includes launching Redistricting U, a national, in-person training program designed to give individuals the knowledge, skills, and tools to take action on redistricting, a program that is now offered virtually. All On The Line is the grassroots campaign of the National Redistricting Action Fund, a 501(c)(4) affiliate of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee.
