All On The Line: Redistricting Commission Must Reflect CO’s Diversity
AOTL Joins 30 Orgs Calling on Judicial Panel to Ensure Final 6 Legislative Commissioners Reflect All Coloradans
Today, All On The Line joins a broad base of 30 organizations across the state calling on Colorado’s Legislative Redistricting Commission Review Panel to uphold the will of voters and ensure the selection of the final six commission members reflects the diversity of the state. As it stands, the first six commissioners selected for the Independent Legislative Redistricting Commission include no members of the Latino, African American, Asian, or Native American communities; no individual who lives south of Highway 50; and only one woman.
“We must have an Independent Legislative Redistricting Commission that represents and reflects all Coloradans. Far too often, it’s communities of color who are least represented in the map-making process and hurt by maps that don’t adequately represent them. In 2018, voters made it clear through Amendment Z that those in charge of drawing Colorado’s legislative maps should reflect our state’s diversity,” said AOTL Colorado State Director Marco Dorado.
“The maps that are drawn by the commission this year will be in place for the next decade. In order to achieve fair maps, it’s the Judicial Review Panel’s duty to appoint commissioners that allow all communities in Colorado to have a seat at the table during this critical process,” Dorado continued.
