All On The Line: State Senate Passes Gerrymandered Map, Disregards Fair Process

Atlanta, GA—Today, Theron Johnson, Georgia State Director of All On The Line, released the following statement in response to the Georgia Senate Reapportionment and Redistricting Committee passing a map for the State Senate that reduces the number of competitive districts in the state by a party line vote:

“This irresponsible behavior from Georgia State Senate Republicans is a clear dereliction of duty. They have deprived voters of having a reasonably noticed public comment period with a  virtual option. It’s clear why they have chosen to pass a map that eliminates competitive seats, allows politicians to dodge any real electoral challenge, and locks out voters from choosing their preferred candidates. These new maps will be key on their path to maintain an unfair grip in power in Georgia and blatantly disregard the will of the voter.

“Georgia Republicans are showing their true colors—their careers are clearly more important than the best interests of the people they were elected to serve. Georgia’s voters deserve a chance to cast their ballots on a fair map that reflects the state’s growth and shifting demographic landscape. The members of the State Senate who have signed off on this map are scared of an electorate that wants more than the divisive, backwards-looking set of politics that they continue to push on voters. We ask the full Senate to vote against this gerrymandered map.”
