All On The Line Statement on Florida Draft Senate and Congressional Maps
Today, Katie Vicsik, Florida State Director of All On The Line, released the following statement in response to the draft state senate and congressional maps released by the Florida Senate Committee on Reapportionment:
“The draft state senate and congressional maps released today are a good starting point on the path to fair maps. However, we must be clear that these drafts are exactly that—a starting point. All On The Line is cautiously optimistic that Florida legislators might actually listen to voters and build upon the successful implementation of the Fair Districts Amendments. Today’s drafts show that maps can be drawn to accommodate Florida’s population shifts without completely upending existing representation.
“We call on Florida legislators to conduct the remainder of the map-drawing process out in the open and as transparently as possible. From this point on, the public must have every opportunity to engage in the map-drawing process and provide feedback on these maps. A truly fair redistricting process is impossible without incorporating the voices from Florida’s diverse communities. All On The Line will remain vigilant so that Florida voters will be able to cast their ballots within a fair system that will work for the people, not just for politicians.”
