AOTL Texas Calls for Transparency Ahead of July Redistricting Hearings
To ensure a transparent process public input hearings should be widely announced and made accessible to all Texans
This week, the Texas House Redistricting Committee is scheduled to begin its July public hearings with a focus on El Paso and San Antonio to continue the once-a-decade redistricting process in the state. Ahead of the public hearings, All On The Line Texas sent a letter to Representative Todd Hunter, Chair of the House Redistricting Committee calling for hearings to be transparent, well-advertised, and accessible to Texans given the abrupt nature of the upcoming convenings and lack of publicity.
“Redistricting is a foundational government process that deeply impacts policy, the distribution of resources, and will determine our political landscape for the next decade. Every Texan has the right to know when redistricting hearings are scheduled and how to participate in them. Right now only politicians, redistricting lawyers, lobbyists, and a handful of dedicated volunteers know about the upcoming hearings and this is unacceptable,” said Genevieve Van Cleve, Texas All On The Line State Director.
“Public participation in the process is essential and Representative Hunter and his colleagues on the House Redistricting Committee must do better. It’s critical that they share information about current and future hearings more widely and give a minimum of a two week notice to allow Texans to participate in this important process. AOTL Texas and our partner organizations on the ground will continue to fight to ensure that there is a fair process that results in maps where both parties must compete to win the support of Texans at the ballot box,” continued Van Cleve.
