AOTL: Colorado’s Preliminary Legislative Map Marks Another Milestone in Colorado’s Redistricting Process

Today, the Colorado Independent Redistricting Commission staff presented preliminary state house and senate maps, marking another milestone in Colorado’s redistricting process. The release of the preliminary legislative maps come a week after the state’s Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission released its preliminary congressional map. While this is a critical step toward final maps, both the congressional and legislative maps released were drawn using non-final census data and are only preliminary. It is therefore critical for the commissions to conduct intentional outreach to communities of interest during the upcoming public hearings to ensure final maps reflect all Coloradans.

"Colorado’s preliminary legislative maps mark another milestone toward a final map that reflects diverse communities throughout the state. Commission staff have acknowledged that the legislative maps will need a lot of work, therefore it is vital for the redistricting commissions to use these preliminary maps as a starting point to ensure communities of interest are appropriately prioritized in the final map,” said Marco Dorado, AOTL Colorado State Director.

“Given that there is a lengthy process ahead, we believe public hearings are an important forum for the redistricting commissions to learn more about all Coloradans, specifically the AAPI, Black, Indigenous, and Latino communities who are most impacted by the use of non-final Census data. All On The Line Colorado will continue to work to ensure the redistricting commission welcomes all efforts to make public participation in hearings accessible and inclusive of communities across the state,'' continued Dorado.
