Texas State Legislature Passes Gerrymandered Senate and House Maps that Fail to Reflect the State’s Demographics
Today, Genevieve Van Cleve, All On The Line Texas State Director, released the following statement after both chambers voted on the passage of their gerrymandered legislative maps:
“The Republican-controlled Texas Legislature sent aggressively gerrymandered legislative maps to the governor, which clearly fail to reflect the growing and diverse population in the Lone Star State. All legislators who supported these undemocratic maps have turned their backs on Texas voters by endorsing a flawed map-drawing process that has kept the public all but locked out and resulted in unfair maps.
“Both Republican and Democratic voters in Texas were forced to jump through innumerable hoops to deliver their testimony — which overwhelmingly argued against these district lines — only to be ignored at every level by the Republican-controlled Legislature. These maps were clearly drawn to retain a Republican majority and do not represent our state.
“Make no mistake, map manipulators in Texas will be held politically accountable for ignoring the will and the voice of the people. All On The Line Texas will continue to fight to ensure we have fair maps that accurately reflect our state’s growing and diverse communities.”
